Yixing teapots come from the Yixing region located 120 miles northwest of Shanghai. They possess an astonishing history dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).  Artisans making Yixing teapots must have served a long apprenticeship under the guidance of established masters. They receive rigorous training in all aspects of their craft before mastering their techniques. Artisans utilize purple clay which contains natural minerals to create beautiful products of various colors.

The belly of the pot is composed of six panels. Two include Chinese script. A different panel displays elegant birds, and another reveals a house with mountains in the background.

The birds and the script of one panel are tan and delicately painted on the clay. The mountains and second rendition of script are etched into the clay.

The spout, handle, finial, and vertical borders of the panels are in a bamboo motif. Fine detail is the hallmark of Bamboo and Birds.

The handle and spout resemble branches. Small, expressive frogs, delightful in their detail, rest on the finial and the spout.

The finial and handle are round. It’s a pretty stone blue with a brown clay interior.

Delicate Chinese calligraphy, golden in color, circles the lid and shoulder of the teapot.

The script refers to a traditional Chinese poem. This is a very elegant piece.

Consequently, the teapot appears to be caressed by wind. The wind motif is integrated beautifully into the pot and conveys a lovely sense of movement.

Flowing lines carved into the sides complement the teapot’s other wind features. The texture is smooth. Two chops (artist’s signature) appear inside the lid and on the bottom.

The design of this teapot is quite simple and streamlined and is so imaginative.

A tiny animal, perhaps a sea creature, appears on the shoulder, and the artist has included a heart on the top of the handle.

Below its small flair the handle has a textured pattern.

The clay is red-brown. A frog poses alertly on a lily pad lid. The handle resembles a vine, even including minuscule thorns.

The vine motif continues in the spout, where the artist has carved a tendril. This teapot is about as cute as it can be.

The teapot design is distinctive because the top is flush with the upper area of the pot and what is normally a raised finial is actually a circular indentation that permits the top to be removed.
